Key fact: Built as part of the New Towns Act 1946, Livingston lies 15 miles west of Edinburgh and - after the capital - is the second largest settlement in the Lothians. In 1963, twenty years after the Act, the new town of Livingston was built on the open farm land surrounding the ancient village of Livingston. The name was taken from this village which dates back to 12th Century when a Flemish entrepreneur called De Leving was granted land in the area.
