WHITBURN ROAD CLOSURE MAKES WAY FOR ELECTRIFICATION OF NEW LINE
Monday May 11, 2009
As part of the £300m Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link project, a short section of Whitburn Road in Bathgate will be closed to the public for 12 months from Monday, May 25th 2009.During the closure a temporary road will be in place to maintain access for local residents and for motorists travelling to and from Bathgate. The temporary road will run parallel to the cycle path near Whiteside and back onto Whitburn Road, as shown in the map linked below.
This closure is to enable the existing road bridge to be replaced with a larger structure able to accommodate the new railway and over-head electrification equipment.
Hugh Wark, Senior Project Manager, Network Rail said: “This bridge replacement is the first major milestone on the section of line between Drumgelloch and Bathgate and a significant step forward in the delivery of the project. When the new line opens at the end of 2010, it will be a fully double tracked and electrified route between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley and connections beyond.”
Network Rail and its contractors continue to work closely with West Lothian Council and the emergency services to minimise disruption and ensure public safety. The closure is being highlighted in the local media and with strategically placed information signs.
