NEW PLANS FOR CALDERCRUIX STATION APPROVED
Thursday May 07, 2009
Network Rail welcomes the announcement by North Lanarkshire Council that planning permission for the new Caldercruix station has been approved.
The plans involve relocating the new station to the site of the old Caldercruix station, which closed in 1956.
The new station site will bring significant benefits to travellers and local residents. Its central location means the number of people living within 800 metres of the station increases by almost 40%. The new location will also improve access to existing bus routes.
Ron McAulay, Network Rail Director Scotland, said: “We’re delighted with today’s result. This new location will bring the station closer to the heart of Caldercruix, improving access for local people and complementing the existing transport facilities.”
“We look forward to delivering another essential part of the Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link which is bringing considerable benefits to the people of North Lanarkshire and West Lothian.”
The original location proposed for Caldercruix station was on the site of a number of pulp lagoons. The relocation of the station is required after ground investigations of the original station site revealed significant environmental and technical issues with plans to drain three of the five pulp lagoons. Drainage of the lagoons would have been required to allow for the creation of an access road and parking at the planned station.
