BATHGATE STATION CAR PARK MAKES WAY FOR NEW £300M RAIL LINE

Friday April 24, 2009

The main car park at Bathgate Station will close to the public from Monday, May 11, as part of the work to deliver the £300m Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link project.

Access to the car park’s site is required by contractors working on the construction of the new Transport Scotland-funded railway. The current car park lies directly on the route the new railway will take through the town.

While the closure of the car park will initially cause short-term disruption, the finished line will deliver a new, improved station for the town and new car park with more than double the number of parking spaces available.

Members of the public are being advised to use alternative council-run parking facilities within Bathgate town centre.

Ron McAulay, Network Rail Director Scotland, said: “While the closure of the car park will create a short-term inconvenience for some travellers, it is an unavoidable step in the delivery of the new railway for the town. When complete, the Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link will not only mean more trains and increased service reliability for Bathgate, it will also deliver an improved station building and much larger car park.”
